Alexandre Technique Takeaway #Session One

Dear Michael, Thank you for the session yesterday. Since our session until now, I have become very aware of the tension that I have been creating unnecessarily in my body. This gaining in bodily awareness is exactly what I signed up for. And I have also been savoring the many observations and advice that you have given me. Perhaps I can summarize some takeaways, though I am not sure if I can get them correctly. 1. Use all the support you can. Have a situational awareness of what is supporting you (e.g. chair, floor, bed) and allow/adjust yourself so that you can be best supported by them, as much as possible. No need to help a chair. 2. Conversation with Magic Stones

Image
(Abstract statues have a bad name for being erudite. Apparently it has no relevance to our life. When I saw one in the museum, I always felt constipated about what it could mean to me. But overtime, I came to appreciate their "silence" as their reluctance to expose themselves eagerly --  a sign of modesty and dignified reservedness. It meant nothing to me until one day, when I was in a state of vulnerability, it striked me unexpectedly. If you are a Trinity student or professor, I hope this essay on Magic Stones could make you more curious about it. Personally, this is also an exercise for practicing writing about arts) An acquaintance with suffering seem to be a prerequisite to appreciate life’s subtle offering. This explains why I passed by the statuary of Magic St...

A Life of A Walnut Tree

Tree Doctor There is a walnut tree in my yard that is more than 500 years old. I did not know that my landlady Barbara, whom I live with in the house, has contracted a tree doctor to look after her aging tree until one afternoon, in the guest room, a smiling elderly man came up and introduced to me as such. In fact, he has cured her walnut tree of a serious ailment some twenty years ago. At the time, its topmost growth suddenly died, twigs hung limply from the branches, and the insects and fungi attacked it with little resistance on its part. There was a general unwellness that the walnut tree exhibited, and my landlady, who just moved into the house, picked up the subtle SOS signal that the tree sent out. Barbara, at the time, was an antique collector whose day job was to visit old houses about to be demolished, and to acquire household items that would seem worthless to unkeen eyes, such as dusted fireplaces or discarded lamps. In her hand...
